November report on Motel Meals from Kara DeRose:
Thank you so much to everybody who contributed and helped me prep\deliver this month’s meals. We were able to prepare 59 fried chicken dinners, 9 kids lunches, and 4 toddler meals. We were also able to provide breakfast for all. This wouldn’t be possible without everybody’s generous donations! And as you can see our shelves are stocked so we should be set for a few more months! Thank you all!
Social Action is key aspect of Unitarian Universalism.
We focus on good works in this life as the highest expression of our spirituality. Our Social Action Committee is responsible for serving the needs of adults and children in Bordentown and the surrounding areas. Our Social Action Chairwoman for the 2020-2021 year is Kara DeRose.
- Our activities include preparing and delivering meals to the needy living in two motels in Bordentown. They are homeless people living in the motels as emergency shelter. We start at 3 p.m. on the third Thursday of the month. Volunteers are always welcome.
- In August of 2020, DDUUC provided 50 meals, including seven for children and three for toddlers. Donated backpacks and school supplies were also given to needy families.
- We also collect hats, mittens and gloves for both children and adults for our annual Mitten Tree.
- We also collect feminine hygiene supplies to give to St. Mary’s Church Food Pantry. They are collected in a red tub in the church marked, “Red Alert.”
This work is very necessary. One year, the volunteers delivered fried chicken in the recent storm of snow, ice and freezing rain to a family at the Pines Motel. The children receiving the food were so hungry they screamed with delight.
